I know some people may like to use the phrase “you can never be too thin”…(I don’t personally know these people but I know they’re out there)… the truth of the matter is that there is such a thing as being “too thin.” More importantly, although many of us may not verbally express this sentiment, the truth is we still believe there is truth in this statement. How many of us would prefer to be underweight than “fat.” Why else would all of those Special K commercials and similar weight loss ads already feature super slender women?
The video I’ve posted is of a woman named Isabelle Caro, who you might remember from those Italian billboards she did as an attempt to garner awareness of her shocking illness. It’s a very powerful video that I feel speaks for itself.
I stupidly read the comments…*gag*.
All fawning over how “brave” and “beautiful” she is, bla bla bla.
Now if this were a morbidly-obese woman, equally unhealthy, what would the comments be? “Eww gross, put down the donuts fatty”. No encouragement to get better, but hopes that she dies of her illness.
Just goes to show that the thin are viewed as victims to be pitied, while the obese are viewed as perpetrators to be attacked. To be too thin is to be an ascetic in the religion of perfectionism. To die of anorexia is to be a martyr. It’s sick and bloody depressing, and makes me hate Western culture sometimes…
Okay, maybe my comment seems a little knee-jerkish. I don’t have issues with her being called beautiful and encouraging her to get better. I’m just a little shocked after comparing the reactions to this video with those to any story about obesity.
Do you think there is such a thing as too fat too? I;m honestly very curious. I dont know that much about FA.
Gawd.
Just… gawd.
They hospitalized her several times but didn’t give her therapy? That is horrible, it should be malpractice, hands down.
Shocking. Also very sadening to know that so many young girls and women struggle with such an intense issue. Thank you for sharing that video.
Kind of triggering, though I’m glad I saw it. I was once her weight, even a few pounds smaller and slightly taller – I can’t believe I ever looked like that (didn’t take photos), somehow in my head I was always the fat chick! (And I’ll note that not all anorexics look like that, it’s quite possible for someone to be eating disordered and constantly starving but maintain a weight above the standard cut-off for anorexia. And there are legions of people out there, both men and women, who suffer from disordered eating – constant dieting, obsession with health foods etc – so EDNOS prevalence is well underrated.)
I’m ridiculously thankful for recovery, and I hope she’ll recover soon too and go on to live a healthy and happy life.
This needs to be seen and known. Thank you for posting it.
